1
What are the three types of selection?
Directional, stabilizing, and disruptive.
2
What is directional selection?
Favors individuals with extreme traits.
3
What is an example of directional selection?
Antibiotic resistance in bacteria.
4
What happens to the mean in directional selection?
It shifts towards the advantageous trait.
5
Why does antibiotic resistance evolve?
Survival of resistant bacteria after exposure.
6
What is stabilizing selection?
Favors traits in the middle of a range.
7
What is an example of stabilizing selection?
Human birth weight.
8
Why is medium birth weight advantageous?
Low and high weights face survival issues.
9
What happens to variation in stabilizing selection?
It decreases over time.
10
How can data on selection be interpreted?
By analyzing shifts in trait distributions.
11
What graph feature indicates stabilizing selection?
The curve becomes narrower.
12
What tool is used to test antibiotics?
Agar plates with bacterial cultures.
13
How is bacterial growth inhibited on agar?
By zones of inhibition around antibiotics.
14
What is the aseptic technique used for?
Preventing contamination in microbial work.
15
Why are aseptic techniques important?
To ensure accurate and safe results.
16
What safety practices are needed for cultures?
Sterilization and working near a flame.
17
What is a potential cause for trait shifts?
Environmental changes or human impact.
18
What do error bars on a graph show?
Variation in data measurements.
19
What selection does the teenage population shift show?
