Midterm - Art Shows

- Held in 1913
- Displayed at the 69th Regiment Armory in NYC, with smaller tours in Chicago then Boston
- Originally contained 1300 pieces
- Intended to show contemporary American artists against the National Academy of Design but became a place of European avant-garde
- Strong and often hostile reactions to more modernist and cubist pieces; departure from the expectation of art to be realist

- Held in 1937
- contained 650 art works confiscated by the third reich
- Originally in the cramped Muncipal Archealogical Institute, Munich and traveled to 12 German cities
- Seen by 3 million people, one of the best attended shows of the 20th century
- Propaganda for the nazi regime; art mocked throughout with ironic wall text, improper hangings, and instigating captions
