1
what is perception ?
Perception = experience resulting from stimulation of the receptors
2
what is perfection dependent on ?
Perception is dependent on consciousness : a tree doesn't have perception while humans and animals do
3
what is the role of perception ?
perception serves the organism to establish what is going on where in the outside world ( also inner world )
4
why did perception evolve ?
perception has evolved in order to support the species in their natural habitat
5
what is echolocation ?
technique used by bats, dolphins and other animals to determine the location of objects using reflected sound
6
where is echolochation in the brain ?
occipital lobe

echolocation experts make use of visual projection areas in the cortex
7
what is the "what and where " brain ?
dorsal : HOW / WHERE BRAIN

ventral : WHAT BRAIN
8
what problems did patient DF have ?
bilateral lesions in the occipital temporal lobe
9
what path way was affected for patient DF
ventral route affected (what pathway)
10
which path way was not afected at all for patient DF ?
dorsal route unaffected
11
how was patient DF showing off their simpthoms ?
left : models that DF was asked to copy

middle : DF's attempts of copying the models not any close to the original

right : DF's drawings from memory : much closer resemble
12
what is the course of sight : visual perception ?
light / eye/ lens/ retina eceptors
13
what is visual perception?
in human visual perception we establish what is where by information reflected by light
14
what are the limitations of the eyes ?
1. photoreceptors sensitive only to light
2. world is 3D retian is 2 D
3. only 1/2 degrees of visual angle falls on the fovea
15
what is the photoreceptor limitation ?
light : a small part of electromagnetic spectrum

there are more spectrums, the eyes do not see all ( radio , infrared, x rays , gamma rays )
16
what is the invere projection problem ?
a 2D image can be created by an infinite number of 3D objects retia is only 2D
17
what is the visual angle fiels problem?
1/2 degree of visual angle falls on the fivea

blind spot
18
what is the difference in cones and rods density ?
on the outsides : high density rods

in the middle high density cones
19
what is the visual field ?
**he total area in which objects can be seen**
20
how is the visual field ?
1. The image of the world upside down and left right reversed (not really a problem )
21
how is the visual field represented in the brain ?
The leftight visual field are represented crossed and upside down
22
what visual does not ?
Recreate a full image of the world to portray to our inner self

the mind in not a "Cartesian theatre "

there is no homunculus inside

perception is very selective : a lot of information is not registered
23
what vision does ?
use the data on our photoreceptors (in the retina ) to make inferences about what is where
24
what are uncoscius inferences ?
automatic and we're mostly unaware of making them
25
what is the likleyhood principle ?
our percept is most likely solution of the perceptual "problem" posed by the world Hermholtz
26
what is perceptual inferences ?
three black pacmen or white triangle on black disks?

If triangle you also see its sides (illusory edges)
27
what is luminance consistency ?
Checkerboard with dark and white squares

but how much different are black square A and white square B psychically ?( i.e on our retinas)
28
based on what does luminance consistency work ?
1. most likey solution
2. unconscious inferences
29
what is the " most likely solutin " ?
the most plausable option
30
what audition does ?
speech perception : you can hear words separatly without the person making braks
31
what is the problem of ambiguity ?
one stimulus, infinite number of interpretations (even without the 2D/3D inverse projection problem : we asume the easist
what do strategies do we use ?

heuristics : Gestalt approach
32
what are the Gestalt approach rules ?
1. simplest solution
2. symmetry
3. similarity
4. proximity
5. good continuation
6. closure
7. common fate
8. familiarity (past experience )
33
what is the simplicity rule ?
choose the siplest solution ( two triangles one behing the other )
34
what is the symmetry rule ?
symetrical outlines are grouped together
35
what is the similarity rule ?
the similar colours/patterns are grouped together ( woman at the beach )
36
what is the proximity rule ?
objects close together are grouped
37
what is the good continuation rule ?
lines that go in same direction seem to continue eachother
38
what is the closure rule ?
complete incomplete figures when contours are partially missing, grouping them into
39
what is the common fate rule ?
group the elements with a "common fate" (same direction of movement) into an object.
40
what is the familiarity rule ?
Once we have seen the

"solution", the stimulus acquires
41
what is the " use of knowledge about world" rule ?
assume light comes from a direction because that is the knowledge we have
42
what are bottom up perceptions ?
incoming data form the outside world
43
what are top down perceptions?
own expirinces and knowledge of the world
44
what is brain plasticity ?
human brain has been evolved over millions of years of evolution, but it is shaped during its life time
45
what are some examples of brain plasticity ?
Daniel Kish learned to use his occipital lobe for echolocation

Kittens raised in an artificial world with only vertical black and white stripes ignore horizontal objects later on (Blakemore & Cooper, 1970)

Normal knowledge acquisition enables us to interpret an ambiguous world, make predictions, and update beliefs
